Gearing Up for Christmas

christmas tree

Christmas is right around the corner! This is a special time of year to remember the true meaning of Christmas, spend with family, and give back to others.

It’s also a fun time to decorate your home for the holidays. You know you’ll need a tree, wreath, and a festive mantel… but what’s the best way to pull the colors and themes all together? Miskelly Furniture has compiled five holiday home ideas for decorating and creating a joyful, holiday atmosphere.

1. Compliment Your Home’s Decor – Focus on the colors you already have in your home, and select complementary colors that bring out the seasonal feeling. If your home has warm colors, choose golds and reds for decorations rather than icy white and silver. Keep with the feeling of your home for a harmonious decor.

2. Add Decorative Christmas trees – If you visit Miskelly’s in December, you’ll see a wide variety of gorgeous, sparkly, decorative trees. These are perfect as centerpieces to place on a table or sideboard. They’re also great as floor decor, particularly by the fireplace.

Choose a favorite that will work well in your home. Here are a few at Miskellys:

3. Enhance Your Home with Ribbons and Bows – Almost any “Christmas-y” look requires ribbons or bows. If you find a ribbon that you particularly like, use colors for the decorating scheme you’ve chosen throughout your home. Bows are inexpensive, and easy to find and decorate with.

4. Create a Welcoming Holiday Atmosphere – To put guests in the Christmas spirit when they walk into your home, burn a scented candle at the front entrance. This instantly creates that warm and fuzzy atmosphere we all know and love. Use scents like gingerbread cookies, apple spice, or pine. Oils and air fresheners work, as well.

5. Choose the Right Gift Wrapping Paper – There are tons of gift wrapping papers out there, so wouldn’t it be smart to pick the one that best fits your tree and the overall room? First ask yourself: Do I have colored or white lights on the tree? Am I decorating primarily with reds, greens, golds, or silvers?

When deciding on a wrapping paper(s) that will be prominently seen under the tree, keep your decorating scheme in mind so you can choose colors and patterns wisely.

Miskellys also wants to throw in a few recipes (because it wouldn’t be the holidays without food!) If you’re having guests over or attending get-togethers, here are a few easy and tasty recipes perfect for a big crowd:

Bacon-Wrapped Cocktail Sausages

  • 1 14-oz. package little smokies
  • 12-oz. package lean bacon
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar

Preheat your oven to 325°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Strip the bacon into thirds. Wrap 1/3 of each slice of bacon around each sausage and secure with a toothpick and place on the baking sheet. Repeat with remaining sausages and bacon. Sprinkle brown sugar over sausages and bake at 325°F for 40-45 minutes or until bacon has cooked and is starting to brown. Yummy!

Bacon-Wrapped-Little-Smokies-2Peppermint Bark

  • Crushed candy canes, to yield 1 cup
  • 2 pounds white chocolate
  • Peppermint flavorings (optional)

Place candy canes in a plastic bag and hammer into 1/4-inch chunks or smaller. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Combine candy cane chunks with chocolate (add peppermint flavoring at this point if desired.) Pour mixture onto a cookie sheet layered with parchment or waxed paper and place in the refrigerator for 45 minutes or until firm. Remove from cookie sheet and break into pieces.

Chili Cheese Dip

  • 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 can  (15 oz.) chili (any variety)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1-1/2 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup sliced green onions

Heat oven to 350°F. Spread cream cheese onto bottom of ovenproof baking dish. Top with chili and cheddar cheese. Then, top with tomatoes and onions. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until dip is heated through and cheese is melted. Serve with tortilla chips or crackers.

Miskelly’s Third 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our third 2015 Season of Giving recipients are Charles and Kathy Harrell.

Charles and Kathy have taken in six siblings who were removed from their parents due to neglect.  The siblings were going to be separated. The girls would go to different foster homes and the boys to Piney Woods. Charles and Kathy were determined not to let that happen, so they stepped in and arranged for all six children to live with them.

The Harrells have a son of their own. The family has suddenly increased from three members to nine, and they live in a two-bedroom house.

With a full house and Christmas right around the corner, they were in need of a little help. Miskelly’s delivered a truckload of new furniture to the Harrell family. Headboards, chests and mattresses!

We are grateful for the opportunity to help the Harrell family, and hope they have a joyous Christmas together.

Miskelly’s Second 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our second 2015 Season of Giving recipient is Mr. Joseph Horne.

Joseph Horne is a security officer for MDOT.  In 2013 he found his 30-year-old wife passed out from a brain aneurysm.  She later passed away.

Joseph and his wife had no health insurance. Trying to pay her medical bills cost him everything. He lost his home and car.  He lost his job because he had no transportation.  He lived in motels, boarding houses, and one church.  This past January he became an occupant of the Salvation Army and they helped him secure his current job.  Co-workers have been a huge help by providing him transportation to and from work.  He has saved enough money to rent an apartment, but it’s empty. He has been sleeping on the floor with a blanket.

Miskelly’s is grateful for the opportunity to help Joseph.horne 1 We are happy to report that he will no longer be sleeping on the floor!horne 2

Miskelly’s First 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Miskelly Furniture feels very strongly about giving back to the community. Several years ago we recognized that there are people in our local area in need. We then began our Season of Giving promotion in which people submit nominations for individuals or families. Miskelly’s, in partnership with WLBT, select recipients to receive furniture and Miskelly’s delivers it to the recipients before Christmas.

Our first 2015 Season of Giving recipient is Ms. Wanda Wells.  Wanda is a widow who took in her abandoned grandson Cameron two years ago.  Wanda was recently able to acquire a small apartment for she and Cameron, but they have no bed and are sleeping on a mattress on the floor.  Wanda is employed, but her income is small.

Thanks to Wanda’s employers, who nominated her for the Miskelly Season of Giving, she’s received brand new living room, dining room and bedroom furniturewanda wells 1 wanda wells 2Miskelly’s is grateful to give back to the community, and we are all so happy for Wanda.

Miskelly’s Season of Giving Third Recipient

Miskelly Furniture is happy to announce our third Season of Giving recipient. Our deserving recipient is a long-time Jackson resident and stays busy raising her four grandchildren on her own.

We like to help out any way we can, and for us, that means providing quality furniture for those in need. As we all know, raising even one child can take a lot of energy! And there’s no better way to be well-rested than to have a warm, high-quality bed to return to at night. For the grandchildren, Miskelly donated a comfy sofa, two end tables, and a chair. Every family needs a happy and comfortable home environment, and we hope we’ve provided that for this Season of Giving recipient.

Miskelly’s Second Season of Giving Recipient

Second Season of Giving Delivery

Second Season of Giving Delivery

After a house fire in Jackson last month, the Jones family was left without any belongings except a purse. To add to the tragedy, their home of 32 years didn’t have renter’s insurance, so they truly lost everything.

The Jones family was nominated in Miskelly’s Season of Giving campaign. In partnership with WLBT, the campaign encourages the community to submit nominations for individuals or families in need. Recipients are selected to receive furniture and Miskelly’s delivers it before Christmas.

The Jones’ Season of Giving nominee quoted “After 19+ years working as my housekeeper, I can completely in good faith nominate the Jones family to be deserving of all the help we can give them. Elaine Jones is so hardworking and has helped me raise my three children with Christian values.”

Miskelly Furniture feels very strongly about giving back to the community, and we hope this new furniture helps the Jones’ get back on their feet.

Miskelly’s Season of Giving 2014 – First Recipient

Miskelly's Season of Giving 2014

Miskelly’s Season of Giving 2014

Miskelly Furniture feels very strongly about giving back to the community. Several years ago we recognized that there are people in our local area in need. We then began our Season of Giving promotion in which people submit nominations for individuals or families. Miskelly’s, in partnership with WLBT, select recipients to receive furniture and Miskelly’s delivers it to the recipient’s before Christmas.

Our first recipient this year is John Wayne Blough II, a retired EMT with the former Rankin General Hospital and a retired fireman with the Pearl Fire Department.

“Like Lilly, bless her heart, she’s never had a dresser that would stay together,” John Wayne said, referring to his daughter. This, from a man who’s slept in a chair the past three years. And–despite being out of work after forcing to retire due to health issues–he’s giving back to the community and making a positive impact.

“Now we’ve got a queen size bed. It’s going to take me a good while to get used to that because I’ve been sleeping in a chair for so long,” said John Wayne. “I thank God everyday since I got that phone call. It’s unbelievable.”

He’s immersed himself in the ministry “COWBOYS”, an image of his family and his beliefs: Christ. Outstanding. Work. Benefiting. Our. Youth. Studied.

Miskelly Furniture hopes what we’ve delivered will work well for him and his family. We’re happy that he’ll be able to sleep on a queen size bed. He’s given back to his local community and we’re proud to give back to him.
