Wake Up Your Bedroom

The ultimate bedroom is the perfect blend of restful retreat and stylish sanctuary. While what’s beautiful and relaxing to each person differs, there are a few essential strategies that can help anyone create the bedroom of their dreams. Take your bedroom from blah to breathtaking with these easy updates.

Your bedroom can look as much or as little like the rest of your house as you want. Don’t feel limited to your current décor style. Sometimes a private space is a great place to try a new design aesthetic. Take a break from your traditional design roots and try on a more modern look with streamlined furnishings, solid color linens and minimal accessories. Or warm up your space by giving your contemporary style a rest and embracing more classic elements.

A gorgeous space originates by surrounding yourself with things you love. Begin with your favorite colors, finishes, and materials. Find a bed or headboard that speaks to you and layer on the most luxurious bed linens your budget will allow.

Choose one or two main colors and one or two accent colors, and stick with them throughout the room. If you want to incorporate patterns, select a dominant pattern and one or two supporting designs (of varying scale) for fabrics and bed linens. Want a crisp, clean look like that of a high-end hotel? Choose muted colors, high-quality cottons and stick to solids or subtle tone-on-tone patterns.

Give careful consideration to where you place your furnishings. Is everything visually balanced and within easy reach? Use lighting to illuminate your room and block out distracting outdoor lighting with drapery panels. Accent rugs protect hardwood floors while adding cushioning, warmth, and visual appeal.

Make your bedroom uniquely yours by adding personal touches. Display your favorite photos, accessories and mementos, yet limit your choices for maximum impact. Too many items can make a room feel cluttered and overwhelmed.

An easy way to ensure the long-term beauty of your newly designed bedroom is to banish clutter. Here’s how:

Miskelly’s Third 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our third 2015 Season of Giving recipients are Charles and Kathy Harrell.

Charles and Kathy have taken in six siblings who were removed from their parents due to neglect.  The siblings were going to be separated. The girls would go to different foster homes and the boys to Piney Woods. Charles and Kathy were determined not to let that happen, so they stepped in and arranged for all six children to live with them.

The Harrells have a son of their own. The family has suddenly increased from three members to nine, and they live in a two-bedroom house.

With a full house and Christmas right around the corner, they were in need of a little help. Miskelly’s delivered a truckload of new furniture to the Harrell family. Headboards, chests and mattresses!

We are grateful for the opportunity to help the Harrell family, and hope they have a joyous Christmas together.

Miskelly’s Second 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our second 2015 Season of Giving recipient is Mr. Joseph Horne.

Joseph Horne is a security officer for MDOT.  In 2013 he found his 30-year-old wife passed out from a brain aneurysm.  She later passed away.

Joseph and his wife had no health insurance. Trying to pay her medical bills cost him everything. He lost his home and car.  He lost his job because he had no transportation.  He lived in motels, boarding houses, and one church.  This past January he became an occupant of the Salvation Army and they helped him secure his current job.  Co-workers have been a huge help by providing him transportation to and from work.  He has saved enough money to rent an apartment, but it’s empty. He has been sleeping on the floor with a blanket.

Miskelly’s is grateful for the opportunity to help Joseph.horne 1 We are happy to report that he will no longer be sleeping on the floor!horne 2

Miskelly’s First 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Miskelly Furniture feels very strongly about giving back to the community. Several years ago we recognized that there are people in our local area in need. We then began our Season of Giving promotion in which people submit nominations for individuals or families. Miskelly’s, in partnership with WLBT, select recipients to receive furniture and Miskelly’s delivers it to the recipients before Christmas.

Our first 2015 Season of Giving recipient is Ms. Wanda Wells.  Wanda is a widow who took in her abandoned grandson Cameron two years ago.  Wanda was recently able to acquire a small apartment for she and Cameron, but they have no bed and are sleeping on a mattress on the floor.  Wanda is employed, but her income is small.

Thanks to Wanda’s employers, who nominated her for the Miskelly Season of Giving, she’s received brand new living room, dining room and bedroom furniturewanda wells 1 wanda wells 2Miskelly’s is grateful to give back to the community, and we are all so happy for Wanda.

Memorial Day 2014: Remembering Those We’ve Lost

Memorial Day came into existence following the Civil War to honor the fallen soldiers from both the Union and Confederate sides of America’s most tragic and violent conflict. Originally called “Decoration Day,” the early summer holiday officially became known as Memorial Day in the mid 20th century. Now, Memorial Day serves as a tribute to all servicemen and servicewomen that have lost their lives while protecting American liberty.

Memorial Day 2014

Although to many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer holiday season, the traditions of this reverent holiday go far beyond backyard barbecues and sunscreen. The graves of fallen soldiers and military personnel are traditionally decorated with flowers on Memorial Day as a sign of respect. In many cities throughout the United States, parades are held showcasing current and former servicemen and women.

Amid the fun and excitement of Memorial Day, it is important to stop and remember those in the United States Armed Forces who have lost their lives in the struggle for our country’s freedom. Without their sacrifice, our comforts and luxuries would never have come to be. If you have the opportunity, thank an active or former serviceman or servicewoman on Memorial Day.

Thank a serviceman or servicewoman.

Miskelly Furniture is a proud supporter of America’s military forces. This Memorial Day, we encourage you and your family to pause your celebration just for a moment and remember those that lost their lives fighting for our way of life. We wish everyone a safe and wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

How We Stay Earth-Friendly at Miskellys

greenNot only does Miskelly go beyond furniture with price, selection and service, but we are also way beyond furniture when it comes to going green.

We want to have a healthy environment so we’ve implemented many earth-friendly initiatives to do our part in protecting our natural resources. These initiatives help our community, environment and it’s also a great business practice.

Here are a few ways we’ve become “Earth-Friendly”:

  • Recycling paper, plastics, cardboard, metal materials and light bulbs
  • Densify all Styrofoam material (which is in turn is recycled)
  • Zoned lighting in our distribution center so lights are turned off when work is no longer being performed in a certain area
  • Motion sensor lighting in distribution center aisles, eliminating the cost to light the aisles when not in use
  • Installation of economical energy-saving fixtures and bulbs throughout the facility
  • Installation of a state of the art “Chiller Plant” for the optimum energy efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, & air conditioning)
  • GreenGard furniture care products
  • Recycle furniture –  we donate parts to Gateway Rescue Mission and other charitable organizations.

  • Miskelly’s recycles almost 500 tons of cardboard annually. That is equivalent to 9,000 trees!

  • Miskelly’s currently recycles over 52,000 lbs. of plastic each year. Plastic can take up to 400 years to breakdown in a landfill!

  • Miskelly’s is one of the few furniture companies in the country to recycle polystyrene. Polystyrene (Styrofoam) takes 1,000 years to break down in a landfill.

At Miskelly’s, we believe the steps we take today towards a cleaner environment will result in a better future for our company, the people of our community and the environment we live in. We are proud to reduce waste through our recycling programs, and we encourage you and your family to go green, too!
