Miskelly’s Third 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our third 2015 Season of Giving recipients are Charles and Kathy Harrell.

Charles and Kathy have taken in six siblings who were removed from their parents due to neglect.  The siblings were going to be separated. The girls would go to different foster homes and the boys to Piney Woods. Charles and Kathy were determined not to let that happen, so they stepped in and arranged for all six children to live with them.

The Harrells have a son of their own. The family has suddenly increased from three members to nine, and they live in a two-bedroom house.

With a full house and Christmas right around the corner, they were in need of a little help. Miskelly’s delivered a truckload of new furniture to the Harrell family. Headboards, chests and mattresses!

We are grateful for the opportunity to help the Harrell family, and hope they have a joyous Christmas together.

Miskelly’s Second 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our second 2015 Season of Giving recipient is Mr. Joseph Horne.

Joseph Horne is a security officer for MDOT.  In 2013 he found his 30-year-old wife passed out from a brain aneurysm.  She later passed away.

Joseph and his wife had no health insurance. Trying to pay her medical bills cost him everything. He lost his home and car.  He lost his job because he had no transportation.  He lived in motels, boarding houses, and one church.  This past January he became an occupant of the Salvation Army and they helped him secure his current job.  Co-workers have been a huge help by providing him transportation to and from work.  He has saved enough money to rent an apartment, but it’s empty. He has been sleeping on the floor with a blanket.

Miskelly’s is grateful for the opportunity to help Joseph.horne 1 We are happy to report that he will no longer be sleeping on the floor!horne 2

Four Design Tips for Every Home Decorator

Miskelly Furniture

We all know that if you want to build something that will last, you need to start with a strong and steady foundation. Your personal home décor is no different. No matter how large the space or how different the style, there are several ways to come up with a nice design plan.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the key things to remember when creating an interior design scheme! Here are some of Miskelly’s top tips:

1. Create a Focal Point
When you walk into your room, what draws the attention of your eye? What will your guests focus on when they come to visit? Fireplaces and large televisions are two of the most common focal points today. But what about a large piece of art, or a grand lighting piece? Whatever you choose, make sure that your furniture is arranged so it complements the focal point. Your guests should not need to turn their heads or sit uncomfortably to focus on this part of the room.

Miskelly Furniture

2. Arrange for Balance
The focal point is important, but it can’t completely dominate the room. Balance – whether by color, shape, or arrangement – is important to a well designed room. The traditional approach is to split similar furniture along a middle axis. Think about a bedroom where the bed is accompanied by bedside tables on either side. The modern trend is to achieve asymmetrical balance. Think of this as balancing by visual impact rather than size or shape. Maybe a tall, thin lamp on one side of the room is complemented by a short wicker hamper on the other. The pieces are different, but they balance by making different statements.

Miskelly Furniture

3. Consider Colors Carefully
Color is great because it gives you a range of options when it comes to interior design. It can instantly alter the look and feel of a living space. There are various approaches you could go with… If you choose to use similar colors (let’s say shades of grey and beige), the effect on the room will be calmer and more neutral. If you want a more dynamic and high energy look, try using contrasting colors.

Tip: Changing major color schemes can be costly, so it’s probably most safe to go with neutral colors for large features, but reserve accessories and accents for bolder colors.

Miskelly Furniture

4. Talk About Texture
Texture, often overlooked, can play a big role in home design. Do you have slick hardwood floors with fluffy accent pillows and shiny glass features? Be careful! This can look like your textures are running amok. Using only one texture can get boring, but using too many can confuse the eye and complicate the mood of the room. Just like colors and shapes, textures have a huge effect. Shaggy textures feel warm and cozy. Slick and sharp textures will feel more clean and open. Think about how you want your room to feel, then decorate accordingly!

We sure hope that these few tips will make your interior design aspirations really come to life! Choose Timeless Furnishings

To create a room designed to evolve with your child over the years, select furnishings they won’t quickly outgrow. Later, you can customize the look of the room over the years with easy-to-update elements such as paint color, bedding and artwork.

Encourage Organization

While “Clean up your room!” will always be part of the parental monologue–it can be less frequent with the right furnishings. Look for bookcases, beds with storage underneath, and nightstands with doors and drawers to help contain books, toys and clutter.

Design For Comfort

Between homework and sleep-overs, kids spend plenty of time in their room. Give their space as much thought and consideration as the other rooms in your home. Be sure to leave enough open space for kids to spread out homework or play with friends.

A Recipe for Delicious Dining Decor

Ever look at your dining room or eat-in kitchen and dream of a more stylish solution? Your dream dining space may be as easy to create as your favorite recipe!

Rectangular Dining Table with Antique Chairs

Preparation
All great recipes require a little prep work, and so does interior decorating.

1. Start by identifying the space (kitchen or dining room) that you want to redo and begin imagining its potential. Think about how you would like it to function for your family and lifestyle. Consider your typical mealtime, holidays, and formal entertaining needs.

2. Get inspired! Spend some time poring over lifestyle photos in home magazineswebsites, and Pinterest; then create a “dream file” of your favorite looks.

3. Begin editing and organizing your dream file. Identify your favorite colors, styles, and furnishings. Notice what your favorite rooms have in common – is it the room’s overall aesthetic? The shape of the dining table? Is the color palette what draws you in? Or are you attracted to the accessories and finishing touches?

4. Finally, gather together measurements and photos of your current room. Collect as many samples of the paint colors, fabrics, and finishes from your room as possible.

5. Get started! From here you have a couple of options – you can either tackle the project on your own or consult a professional designer. If redecorating is outside of your comfort zone, consider working with a staff designer at your favorite furniture retailer.

Dining Table and 4 Side Chair Set at Miskellys

Dining Table and 4 Side Chair Set at Miskellys

Ingredients
While every dining space is unique, great dining spaces share some key ingredients:

Plenty of Comfortable Seating
Since most of the time shared in this room is spent seated, comfortable, stylish chairs should be a top priority. Plush seating encourages people to relax, talk more, and stay longer. For a casual look – consider mixing chair styles; for a more formal feel – coordinate your guest chairs and accent them with unique head chairs.

Good Lighting
Chandeliers and light fixtures provide more than just light – they add personality and ambiance to a space. Upgrading your lighting is a fast and easy decorating fix.

Abundant Storage
In both the kitchen and dining room, spacious storage is a must. From sideboards and buffets to china cabinets and bars – there are stylish furniture solutions designed to help keep serving pieces, linens, and clutter out of sight.

Elements of Style
Every beautiful dining space features its own design elements. If your dining room furnishings are outdated or hand-me-downs, start your room makeover by replacing them with pieces you truly love. Choose colors, furniture, and accessories that reflect your personal sense of taste and they’ll never feel out of date.

The Importance of Good Sleep on a Good Mattress

P_22-25_KLAU_980

Are you sometimes irritable and unmotivated in the morning? Do you ever get accused of waking up on the wrong side of the bed? If so, maybe it’s just that you woke up on the wrong bed! If you’re resting on an old or unsuitable mattress, you’re probably not sleeping well–and that can lead to more problems than you may realize.

03-37-38-48_640

Better Sleep for a Better You
The key to becoming healthier, more productive, and less stressed may be in the quality of the Zzzzzz you get each night. Appropriate rest may even help you slim down. Studies have found that people who are sleep deprived experience an alteration in the hormones responsible for regulating metabolism. As a result, they tend to crave carbs and high-calorie foods. However, optimal sleep on a regular basis can regulate the body and lead a person to make more healthful choices.

In addition to metabolism, sleep greatly impacts your:

  • Agility
  • Immune system
  • Coordination
  • Nervous system
  • Energy
  • Cardiovascular system

You’ll also find that a good night’s sleep can improve your mood and mental health by making you more alert and enhancing your judgment, concentration and information retention. Your stress levels, social interactions, and daily functioning will also improve as a result.

P_22-25_SAMU 8808

A National Epidemic
Despite the numerous benefits of sleep, Americans aren’t getting enough. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, and 60% of adults report sleeping poorly a few nights a week or more.

In some cases, stress, injury, or health problems can contribute to a sleep disorder, but according to the Better Sleep Council, many Americans have sleep problems due to sleeping on a bad mattress. Mattresses that are old (over eight years), of poor quality (saggy and lumpy), or not a match for a person’s sleep needs (too small, too firm, not firm enough) are the primary culprits.

A Foundation for Good Sleep
The great news is that a bad mattress is something that’s easily corrected. Simply replace your old one with an improved model, and you’re on your way to better sleep! Just take care to select the right one for you.

When mattress shopping, try out and compare different options. Lie down on soft, medium firm, and very firm varieties. Also explore different styles, including innerspring, memory foam, latex foam, hybrid, and air models.

P_22-25_STAD_96000

Stretch out in your regular sleeping position so that you can see which mattress feels the most comfortable and supportive. If you share your bed with someone, bring him or her along as well. Make sure you select a mattress that feels best to both of you–and that doesn’t transfer movement when one of you moves.

Try to avoid checking the prices of the mattresses until you’ve narrowed your selection down to two or three choices. This will ensure you’re only influenced by whether a mattress has the potential to give you the best night’s sleep.

While furnishings set the design direction of your bedroom, it’s the finishing touches that really make it feel comfortable. Dress your bed in soft layers and add accessories in coordinated colors. Use meaningful photos and decorative elements to personalize the space and complete the look.

How to Design Your Dream Bedroom

With today’s hectic lifestyles, everyone needs a place to escape. There’s no better place to rest, restore, and rejuvenate than your bedroom. Miskelly Furniture has a few simple strategies to help you make this space a relaxing retreat of your dreams…

Dream Big
Start by imagining your ultimate bedroom or finding a photo that inspires you. Then identify your favorite elements: Is it the colors in the room you like the most? Is the headboard what you’ve always dreamed of? Are the bed linens and accessories what are most appealing? Also consider the overall style of your inspiration room–is it traditional, contemporary, transitional, cottage, or eclectic? Defining your style preferences will help guide your design decisions.

Create a Soothing Environment
Once you have a vision for your bedroom, begin your room makeover by organizing and simplifying. It’s hard to relax in a space filled with stacks of papers and piles of laundry. Try to find a place for everything and keep clutter out of sight–and out of mind. Open, uncluttered spaces give the eye a place to rest and encourage relaxation. A soothing color palette is also a must-have for creating a calming retreat.

Sleep Well
A relaxing bedroom environment helps promote quality uninterrupted sleep, the cornerstone of healthy living. Evaluate your bedroom for its ability to support your sleep needs. Experts recommend bedrooms be dark, cool, and quiet. A supportive mattress set is a key component of a good night’s sleep. If yours is more than eight years old, it’s time for a new one.

Layer in Softness
While furnishings set the design direction of your bedroom, it’s the finishing touches that really make it feel comfortable. Dress your bed in soft layers and add accessories in coordinating colors. Use meaningful photos and decorative elements to personalize your space and complete the look.

Your Guide For Finding Comfy & Stylish Reclining Furniture

It’s not every day you find a piece of furniture you can’t live without. When that happens, you’ll never forget that first moment, the one when you sat back… and reclined. Suddenly furniture has a whole new meaning as you realize there are stylish options that offer amazing comfort!

3-Piece Reclining Sectional at Miskelly Furniture

3-Piece Reclining Sectional at Miskelly Furniture

Need some help finding that comfortable and stylish piece that really speaks to you? Sit back, relax, and read on for helpful tips on the Miskelly blog…

A Seat for Every Style
Today’s reclining furniture (also called motion furnishings) are available in every style imaginable. Whether you prefer the clean lines of contemporary, the understated elegance of traditional styling, or the casual comfort of an overstuffed model–there’s something for everyone. Start your search for the perfect sofa or chair by defining your style preference or work with an in-store designer to determine the look that best complements your room’s existing furnishings.

Fashion in Flight
Gone are the days when reclining furniture wasn’t very pretty and came in just one style. The recliner of the past has been replaced with a range of options in stylish silhouettes, touchable textiles, and fashionable colors. Many attractive chairs and sofas look like their stationary counterparts, keeping their motion capabilities concealed until you recline.

Relaxation Station
The beauty of reclining furniture is its ability to cradle and conform to your body while providing the relaxation of elevating your feet. If you want even more comfort, look for chairs that include built-in massage and heat features. From basic vibration to deep-tissue massage, high-tech models are big on functionality.

Customizable Style
As with most sofas and chairs, motion furnishings can be customized in a variety of ways to fit your style and budget. After you’ve selected the shape and size that best fits your space, consider whether your dream furniture will wear fabric or leather–both offer distinct advantages. Other popular custom options include: foot style and finish, arm style, nailhead trim, cushion and pillow fill, and toss pillow cover choice.

Power Up
Motorized or manual? The choice is yours! Most motion furnishings offer the choice of manual or motorized reclining mechanism. You can also look for desirable extras such as: built-in speakers, docking stations and chargers, tray tables, hidden storage, and cup holders.
