5 Easy Decor Ideas for Spring and Summer

Spring and summer are all about relaxing and enjoying the seasons. From cooling interior color palettes to opting for casual interiors over the stuffy formal ones, spring and summer decor ideas are easy.  Do you have a summer beach house, or would you like your apartment to FEEL like a summer beach house? Either way, the warm outdoors and cool evening breezes make your home the optimal place to entertain and relax. Try these easy spring/summer decor ideas and take advantage of all that the seasons have to offer.

FURNITURE: Dark and muted tones are perfect for fall and winter, but spring and summer scream for light and airy colors.  Use removable slipcovers, or decorative throws to bring bursts of color and brightness. Prefer whites and neutrals? White and khaki slipcovers are casual but can be dressed up with formal throw pillows in an instant.

DRAPERY: When you want to bring in the cool night air, and keep out the hot summer sun use curtains instead of drapery. Drapery material is heavy and dark, while curtains paired with sheers can give you versatile flexibility in the spring and summer months. If you prefer to savor the views, and not cover up the windows use valances. Valances in light textures and colors will leave your windows looking finished, with an obstructed view.

VIEWS: What better way to welcome spring into your home, than looking at a breathtaking view? Maximize your furniture placement by facing it towards your ocean view, pool, or lush green yard. Your enjoyment of your home is based on your emotions. If opening windows to hear nature makes you feel good, do it!  Don’t love the view from your windows? Consider buying a painting or wall decor that you love the look and feel of.

KID FRIENDLY: Let’s face it, kids are out of school and summer means kids around the house! Make sure fabrics and slipcovers are machine washable, and are casual and fun! Make summertime arts and crafts projects with seashells, pine cones, and nature inspired finds, which the kids can pick out. Their projects can turn into summer decor that you display proudly around your home!

From spring to summer, the decor is all about finding the right balance between enjoyment, relaxing, and livable interiors. Try these tips around the house and see if you don’t instantly feel like taking the day off to enjoy the fresh look of your home.

A Prayer for Veterans’ Day

God of peace,
we pray for those who have served our nation
and who laid down their lives
to protect and defend our freedom.

We pray for those who have fought,
whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war,
whose nights are haunted
by memories too painful for the light of day.

We pray for those who serve us now,
especially for those in harm’s way:
shield them from danger
and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds
of our leaders and our enemies
to the work of justice and a harvest of peace.

Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor!

May the peace you left us,
the peace you gave us,
be the peace that sustains,
the peace that saves us.

Christ Jesus, hear us!
Lord Jesus, hear our prayer!

Simple Decorating Ideas for Fall

Autumn or fall is the best time of the year to incorporate earth tone colors into your home decorations. The return of cooler temperatures, fall colors, and nature changing before our eyes is all the evidence we need that autumn is officially here.  Adding autumn touches of decor to your home will help you transition into the new season with excitement of the passing of the year. From the exterior to the interior of your home, fall decor colors can be rich and robust or subtle and subdued.  Choose your style and see how these 5 decorating tips and ideas will make you want to jump into a pile of leaves to celebrate autumn!

1.) Display artwork that depicts fall themes/colors:

In your front foyer or located on a predominate wall; fall artwork can change the mood in your home instantly.  Consider nature themes with fall colors in oranges, rusts, and golden yellows. If you prefer more abstract art, oil paintings with browns, reds, and burnt umber will make a statement without being obvious.

2.) Use your fireplace to showcase seasonal décor:

Your fireplace mantel has been waiting for this season! Whether you look in your yard, or you travel to an arts and crafts store, dried leaves and pine cones make great décor. Small pumpkins, gourds or dried leaf vines, and colorful candles will brighten your mantle and spirits.

3.) Cooler temperatures mean cozy sitting areas:

As the temperatures begin to fall, bring out the fall colored throw blankets to place on couches or in adjacent baskets. Complimenting fall colored throw pillows will complete any cozy nook for you cuddle up and enjoy a good book.

4.) Dining room table centerpieces/settings can welcome in fall:

Depending on if you want to go formal or casual for your table, choose colors that reflect your home decor and the season.  Consider using red and yellow apples for an informal organic and edible centerpiece.  Remember, the centerpiece doesn’t have to be stagnant, add or detract from it throughout the season for added visual interest.  For more formality consider place settings and able linen that has hints of fall colors and themes.

5.) Welcome guests with a beautiful autumn wreath at your front door:

Simple grapevine wreaths are gorgeous on their own.  If you prefer more adornment consider adding pine cones, leaves, berries and corn husks to your wreath.  If you have a large home with many windows that face the entry of your home, consider placing matching wreaths hung from these windows as well.

“Bought a bunk bed that was on back order. The sales rep we bought it from kept us informed on the status of our order and got us an early calendar date for delivery and setup. The staff is very nice and very willing to assist in picking out furniture. The gentlemen that brought the bunk bed were very nice and finished quicker than I had expected. We’ll be buying more furnishings from here in the future.”

“I bought a beautiful bedroom suite made of solid wood for an unbelievably good price. It was delivered right on time and we have not had any issues with our purchase. Our family has purchased furniture from Miskelly’s for years and have always received quality merchandise and excellent service. As with any credit purchase, the consumer has a responsibly to read the terms and conditions for the best results. We have used the no interest financing many times. It is great as long as you follow the terms. Our salesman, Adam, has always explained the credit terms clearly and I am sure the other sales staff at Miskelly’s do the same with each credit purchase. The sales people at Miskelly’s are very well trained and honest to give customers the best buying experience. Great Job Ladies and Gentlemen!!!”

– Kathy     Google reviewer

“My experience was wonderful with Miskelly’s! I bought a dining set for my eat in kitchen. It was delivered within a few weeks and the day I got it the wires fell out after we stored the leaf and went to slide it shut. Obviously a factory defect, but bc of an amazing salesman (Sean) and wonderful Customer Service I got a replacement table delivered within two weeks. I live almost three hours away so I had to wait till their usual delivery time for my area which was no big deal. I can’t say enough about my salesman….he was top notch and friendly and stayed on top of things from the very beginning. He gave me his personal cell phone number and has been there for me throughout the whole process! He is very knowledgeable about the products and warranties and most of all he goes above and beyond to please his customers! I will definitely be going back and will ask for Sean when I get there! Thanks Miskelly’s for a great experience!”

Design Fix – 5 Common Design Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Does this describe your room: beige walls, beige sofa, beige carpet, beige drapes, beige pillows? If your space is defined by its outdated neutral palette, it’s easy to upgrade with color. Introduce cool shades of aqua and blue to enliven dull tans and browns, or choose warm reds and oranges to infuse life into a mostly gray palette.

stuck in neutral2. STAYING TOO SOLID

If your room needs a refresh, it might be as simple as adding more patterns. Incorporating geometrics, oversized florals and bold graphic prints into a space is comparable to giving it a face lift. Patterns help update a room and give it dimension. Top patterns to look for include bold tribal prints, tile patterns, over-scaled damasks, and organic natural motifs.

For many years, silver finishes reigned supreme and were the only acceptable look in home decor. Recently silver, chrome and nickel have been upstaged by gold, copper and rose gold. So what’s today’s hottest finish? Mixed metals. To achieve today’s most desirable looks, top designers are creating spaces that blend a variety of metallic finishes together.

mind your metals4. FORGETTING TO LOOK DOWN

While it’s common to agonize over just the right wall color, floors often go forgotten. Give your floor the attention it deserves with an area rug or runner. There are designs to fit every taste and décor style, from traditional oriental rugs to modern ikat patterns and animal prints.

Lighting is the fastest, easiest way to romance a room. Fashion- forward table lamps, floor lamps and chandeliers make it simple to add instant style and a touch of drama.  And don’t feel like your lamps have to match—today’s design trends encourage looks where furnishings complement, not imitate, each other.

Wake Up Your Bedroom

The ultimate bedroom is the perfect blend of restful retreat and stylish sanctuary. While what’s beautiful and relaxing to each person differs, there are a few essential strategies that can help anyone create the bedroom of their dreams. Take your bedroom from blah to breathtaking with these easy updates.

Your bedroom can look as much or as little like the rest of your house as you want. Don’t feel limited to your current décor style. Sometimes a private space is a great place to try a new design aesthetic. Take a break from your traditional design roots and try on a more modern look with streamlined furnishings, solid color linens and minimal accessories. Or warm up your space by giving your contemporary style a rest and embracing more classic elements.

A gorgeous space originates by surrounding yourself with things you love. Begin with your favorite colors, finishes, and materials. Find a bed or headboard that speaks to you and layer on the most luxurious bed linens your budget will allow.

Choose one or two main colors and one or two accent colors, and stick with them throughout the room. If you want to incorporate patterns, select a dominant pattern and one or two supporting designs (of varying scale) for fabrics and bed linens. Want a crisp, clean look like that of a high-end hotel? Choose muted colors, high-quality cottons and stick to solids or subtle tone-on-tone patterns.

Give careful consideration to where you place your furnishings. Is everything visually balanced and within easy reach? Use lighting to illuminate your room and block out distracting outdoor lighting with drapery panels. Accent rugs protect hardwood floors while adding cushioning, warmth, and visual appeal.

Make your bedroom uniquely yours by adding personal touches. Display your favorite photos, accessories and mementos, yet limit your choices for maximum impact. Too many items can make a room feel cluttered and overwhelmed.

An easy way to ensure the long-term beauty of your newly designed bedroom is to banish clutter. Here’s how:

Miskelly’s Third 2015 Season of Giving Recipient

Our third 2015 Season of Giving recipients are Charles and Kathy Harrell.

Charles and Kathy have taken in six siblings who were removed from their parents due to neglect.  The siblings were going to be separated. The girls would go to different foster homes and the boys to Piney Woods. Charles and Kathy were determined not to let that happen, so they stepped in and arranged for all six children to live with them.

The Harrells have a son of their own. The family has suddenly increased from three members to nine, and they live in a two-bedroom house.

With a full house and Christmas right around the corner, they were in need of a little help. Miskelly’s delivered a truckload of new furniture to the Harrell family. Headboards, chests and mattresses!

We are grateful for the opportunity to help the Harrell family, and hope they have a joyous Christmas together.
